another enjoyable and successful MayFayre. The welcome sun, heralded our 23rd
Ifield MayFayre and brought out the crowds who were in a party mood, following
the Royal Wedding. The crowds were welcomed by the Mayor of
Crawley, Lee Burke who crowned this year's May Queen Heather Bonner a member of
St Margaret's Church. Heather welcomed
everyone, thanked everyone who had worked towards this day and declared
the Fayre open. You could feel a buzz of anticipation,
excitement and wonderful community fellowship in the air both then
and throughout the day. Never have we seen so many people at the
Fayre - we can only guess how many all told - but we estimate that between 3,000
and 5,000 people attended throughout the day.
The Fayre spreads from behind the Barn
Theatre, through Lych-gate Cottage garden, and across the Churchyard.
Everything one expects from a traditional English village Fayre was provided,
from balloons to bouncy castles; bric a brac to book stalls; burgers and ice
creams to beat the goalie; a silver band, choirs, 60s revival; from candyfloss
to cakes; coconut stall to competitions; cooking demonstrations to crafts, from
darts to traditional maypole dancing, hoopla to hook-a-duck, from face painting
to Fair trade; Punch and Judy. Circus skills to plants to pony rides to pints,
from swing boats to Irish Dancing; Appalachian clog dancing and belly dancing;
scooter displays to splat the rat - we had something for every generation
and it was obvious that many treated it as a family day out and chance to meet
friends old and new. The committee would like to thank those
dedicated volunteers again this year, whether as a stall holder, behind the
bar, manning the PA or the tens of other unsung heroes who make this an
enjoyable village affair. Our thanks must also go to our generous
main sponsors:, The Crawley Observer
whose publicity for the event helps so much, and of course, The Plough pub and
Laser Hub who contribute in so many ways. As a result of the Fayre both St Margaret’s
Church and the Ifield Barn Theatre received a cheque for £4500 Outside Edge 20 – 23 July
2011 Directed by
Jane Hogg and Paula Mayne Please come and see this
very funny play about a local cricket team with more than a few problems for
some of its members and their wives, the least of which is the threat of rain. Meet Roger, team captain and bully; Miriam,
his doormat wife and lynch pin; Kev and Maggie, he the self-taught Cordon Bleu
chef and she the master brick-layer: Bob and new wife Ginnie, who are having
trouble with his ex; Dennis, the get it for you wholesale social climber with
an eye for the ladies; Alex, the arrogant public school pro with his latest
girlfriend Sharon who has a desperate need for the comfort station and a
complete lack of social graces. Our talented cast members
are working hard to make this a really laughter filled evening. So join us for
the cricket match of the year.
‘Disposing Of The
Body’ by Hugh Whitemore Directed by Clare Hall Production dates for your diaries: Oct 5-8th 2011 ‘All my life, I’ve either been looking back at happy times that have gone or looking forward to the happiness to come.’ So speaks Henry Preece, embarking on enforced early retirement in the Cotswolds with his wife, Angela. When life starts to fade into a summery drowsy twilight, things should be a little easier. However, the excitement of an unexpected passion is given full rein and Henry realises that the door he’s just flung open should have remained tightly shut. The mystery of Angela’s disappearance leads to the unravelling of Henry’s world and that of those around him. Hawaiian
Evening Who needs to go on a long flight or spend a fortune to get that holiday feeling? Certainly not those who came to the Barn’s entertaining Hawaiian evening! Over 30 people partook of Hawaiian themed cocktails and a delicious meal of pork, followed by an exotic fruit cocktail. The fun then moved outside to make the most of the balmy evening. Many people took part in an innovative, hilarious bowling match with pineapples as pins and coconuts as bowling balls. Ann Moon was a worthy winner of this competition. Sally McCrae impressed us all with her technique in hula dancing, ably coached by Brenda Burgess. Hazel Wigzell stunned us all with her fabulous sailor outfit (the South Pacific theme was strong) and Roy Bayliss had the misfortune to be wearing the loudest shirt of the evening. The evening was a great success and the committee are to be thanked for all their hard work, with special thanks going to Georgie Froggat. If you do not normally come along to the Barn social events, please consider coming along to the next one. You will enjoy it, honestly! The bar is staffed by volunteers and more are always
needed, particularly during performances. If you feel you can spare an evening
or Sunday lunchtime then please contact Vicki Mills on 01293 536600. Full
training will be given.
Sunday Lunches Sunday lunches are prepared by volunteers and, like
the bar, more are always required. If you are interested in cooking a Sunday
lunch or helping with the clearing up please contact Pat Mortimer on 01293
520393 for more information.
