By Eduardo de Filippo

15th - 18th July 2009

Filumena is a former prostitute who for 25 years has been the mistress of the wealthy Don Domenico Soriano. Unbeknown to her faithless lover, she has three adult sons and has been using his money to pay for their upbringing. When she discovers that Domenico is about to marry a younger woman she pretends to be dying and tricks him into marrying her in a death-bed ceremony.

MAYFAYRE 2009

Well, here we are, having planned for a year the day comes and passes to let the process start again.

This year the weather could have been a little kinder but that appears to be the only negative point of the day. It is early days as there are several bills and some income to come in, but all indications are that 2009 will be our best financial year to date, well done everybody.

The committee wishes to thank everyone who helped in anyway. Without your contribution the Mayfayre would never be a success. Those of you who turned up and spent money or supported the various entertainments are just as important because, without the public support, the Mayfayre would not be a success.

The Mayfayre will never work without the stallholders. I believe the figure is around 125 helpers. Be pleased with your help, because how else could the church and barn raise the sums of money that the Mayfayre does all in one day?

The event would never happen without the hard work put in by a small band of workers, Saturday and Sunday saw people putting up equipment, making the whole place ready so, to all you good folks, a great thank you. On top of this there is a smaller band of people (it would be wrong to name them because it is too easy to miss one) who spend the year planning the event at meetings and, closer to the day, walking the site drawing up the site plan, driving a lorry around to pick up tables, games and the many other items

that have been secured by other members, making sure they are available. On the day they act as marshalls and keep the Fayre ticking over smoothly. Others prepare all the food for sale and undertake many other jobs.

After the day has finished there is always a smaller band of people to take everything down and pack away. But it does not finish then because on Tuesday the games, the tables, the rubbish all have to be dealt with and as you can guess this is done by an even smaller number of people.

Finally it helps the Mayfayre so much that we have sponsors who provide money up front to make sure the Fayre can run smoothly.

Margaret and I have been on the committee for longer than I like to think and we are taking a rest, leaving the committee in very good hands. We shall of course be there on the day helping in anyway we can next year.

I look forward to being able to give an accurate figure for this year fairly soon, so here’s to another successful Mayfayre in 2010.
