Sunday lunches We are always looking for volunteers to help with lunches in many different ways. If you are able to clear tables, wash and iron the tablecloths, act as a kitchen manager to check cleanliness and replenish stocks of cleaning materials etc or you would like to help cook a lunch, we would love to hear from you. You would only be asked to help occasionally to spread the load amongst more of our members. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the lunches.
Children in Belarus Belarus is a country struggling to cope, a country still trying to find it's feet after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and still suffering from the effects of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. It is now accepted that some 70% of the radiation from the Chernobyl explosion fell on the lands of Belarus. This had a devastating effect on the economy of the country and the health of it's people, especially the children. The effects of radiation contamination are long lasting and will take many generations to disappear. Many schools, hospitals and orphanages for children have very inadequate resources and can only provide basic care. Which is why we at the Barn support a Children’s Shelter in Belarus, which is a holding, mid-way house, for the newly orphaned while a permanent place can be found for them elsewhere. These newly orphaned children are the children of the children who suffered from the effects of 1986. The merry-go-round is still turning. The proceeds from the Christmas Card fund at the Barn will go there. If you feel you would like to make a donation to this worthwhile cause, please ring or talk to Eric Jenner [01293 537914] or Stewart Lock [01293 513524] who will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your generosity. BARN CHRISTMAS CARD COLLECTION FOR BELARUS
This year we have asked members not to send cards to their friends at the Barn but to sign a general card instead and then make a donation to the children's orphanage in Belarus, which we supported last year. This orphanage is dedicated to the children, of the children, who suffered at the time of Chernobyl. Yes the saga goes on and on and will do for many a year. These members send their Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all their friends at the Barn David, Jane and Becky Allday, Anne Allison, Anthony Barden, Pam Binns, Keith and Lek Bridgeman, Cathy Chamberlin, Emily Durrant [Jim], Mary and Brian Eastman, Zoe Edden, Ana and Mike Gray, Sue and David Gilbert, Kelly Hammond[Panto], Brian Hawkins, Eric and Margaret Jenner, Stewart Lock, Paula Mayne, Sally McRae, Roger Michael, Kay and Dave Moody, Ann Moon, John and Pat Mortimer, Keith Prior, Sylvia and Jack temple, Sue Ward and Mike Middleton, Hazel Wigzell, Joyce Willoughby, Mike and Gill Underhill and Ann? and Dave W?.
The amount raised is in excess of £200:00 which will be rounded up and sent off as soon as possible. If anyone wishes to make a donation to this cause please contact Eric Jenner who will be delighted to accept any further donations.
A big THANK YOU to all those who have donated so generously. The winners of the 'TREASURE ISLAND 'X' Marks the Spot Competition' in the Pantomime programme are...AOIFE 0'DRISCOLL and ROBERT ACHUCOIRO. Well done to both of them
Cider with Rosie By Laurie Lee ( Stage adaption by James Roose-Evans) Laurie Lee grew up in a small Cornwall village when old country traditions were being swept away by 20th century progress. Cider with Rosie, his famous autobiography, captures the essence of village life, full of a rich variety of characters and events. It has been skilfully recreated for the stage, by James Roose-Evans, as a comic and moving piece of theatre
The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare Reading on Friday 20 February 2009 The Barn will be putting on this play in October, to be directed by Jack Mallinson and Jessica Knight. This extraordinary play is often performed professionally, but remains less well known than other comedies. So we would like to introduce it on an evening in February. The play has several marvellously strong parts: a raging, jealous king, his beautiful queen accused of adultery, their young son, the queen’s rough-tongued companion, a pickpocket, a simple-minded shepherd and his simple son, the pretty shepherdess (in truth a princess) and her princely lover. Not to mention a man-eating bear. The language is not quite how we speak today, but it is more vigorous, more colourful. Once tackled it is amazingly easy to learn, and a delight to say. Come along and find out more.
