Treasure Island
Written and produced by Dave Moody
This rip-roaring, boy’s own adventure is being given a panto style makeover at the Barn this December. Auditions will be at the theatre on Sunday 31st August from 3:00pm onwards. List of characters is a follows:-
Jim Hawkins – (Juvenile male, possibly female playing male, definitely petite!) A confident lad who interacts with the audience. The petite requirement is due to the size of the barrel (If perplexed, read the book…)
Widow Hawkins – (Male as Dame) Jim’s mother, preferably with a West Country burr. Some singing and dance movement required.
Mad Mary doubling as Delilah – (Female) A cackling, lunatic hag who frequents the “Admiral Benbow”. The actress later portrays the Voodoo Queen, a laid back Caribbean type who bears a grudge for Flint’s pirates.
Billy Bones doubling as Israel Hands – (Male) Sickly, salty sea-dog with a secret and a liking for liquor. The actor later portrays an evil pirate.
Doctor Livesey – (Male) effete, slightly snobbish but cool character who doesn’t seem to be fazed by anything. Some singing and dance movement.
“Phew” Pugh doubling with Captain Smollett – (Male) Blind, pongy pirate who always gets the rotten jobs. The actor then takes on the role of the gruff, no-nonsense skipper of the “Hispaniola”.
Squire Lady Trelawney – (Female) A huntin’, shootin’, fishin’, jolly hockey sticks type of a lady; not in the least perturbed by taking the male role of head of her community and is all up for Treasure adventure or indeed for any adventure! Some singing and dance movement.
Parker doubling as Ben Gunn – (Male) Put upon manservant of the Squire, her ladyship (the clue is in the character’s name…). The actor then becomes the maddish, marooned and reformed pirate who longs for a bit of cheese.
Long Jane Silver – (Female) Parrot-less (sadly) but minus a leg (no amputation required!) She’s fearless, canny, scheming, wily but with a roguish charm. She’s the boss of Flint’s old crew and the brainiest one left of them.
Barney McGrew, Cuthbert Dibble and Grubb – (Male x 3, or 2 plus 1 female as male) The surviving members of Flint’s old crew and a right dozy lot. These actors mingle with the audience prior to the show, conduct the community singing and are also required to throw themselves about in the fight scenes, so confident movers are required.
